To strengthen the supervision of new tobacco products such as e-cigarettes, on March 22, the Ministry of Information Technology and the Tobacco Monopoly concurrently made a draft that would lead to the amendment of new tobacco regulations.

According to the proposal in the draft, an article should be added to the supplementary regulations.

“E-cigarettes and other new tobacco products shall be implemented with reference to the relevant regulations on cigarettes in this Regulation.”

This means that the government will further strengthen the supervision of e-cigarettes. The most fundamental reason the supervisor is concerned about the e-cigarette industry is that the quality of various e-cigarette products circulating on the market is uneven. The standards in selecting raw materials, the use of additives, and quality control are also different.

Security risks

Once the regulatory opinions were issued, there were unprecedented discussions on e-cigarettes. However, most of the discussions bypassed the industry regulations and other issues that the supervision itself is concerned about and then developed into the thesis that “e-cigarettes are harmful” and “e-cigarettes need to be banned.”

Why do people Perceive misunderstandings & prejudices about e-cigarettes?

First, it is the industry chaos caused by some e-cigarette practitioners during the promotion. To attract attention, the effect of e-cigarettes is exaggerated.

For example, words like “quit smoking artifact,” “harmless,” “absolutely healthy,” and so on are used.

Secondly, some mass media are misleading, consumers are becoming more prejudiced against e-cigarettes, and the truth about e-cigarettes is getting farther away from them.

In August 2019, health officials from the State of Illinois in the United States announced that an adult died of e-cigarette lung disease (also known as “popcorn lung”). This is considered the first fatal case of “e-cigarette lung disease” in the United States.

Subsequently, thousands of cases of e-cigarette-related diseases were discovered in 49 states in the United States. However, the reversal is coming soon.

In November 2019, the US CDC clarified the rumors of “e-cigarette lung disease,” claiming that the culprit was vitamin E-acetate in THC products and regular nicotine e-cigarettes did not contain this substance.

In other words, “e-cigarette lung disease” patients get sick because they use e-cigarettes as a tool to smoke illegal cannabis oil. After investigating the truth, the US CDC deliberately withdrew the improper advice of “advising the public not to use e-cigarettes.”

However, the rumors that e-cigarettes have caused “popcorn lungs” have already caused irreparable consequences. According to Bloomberg News, the news of “demonizing e-cigarettes” caused many smokers to give up e-cigarettes and return to cigarettes.

As a result, cigarette sales in the United States broke the downward trend in the past few decades and rebounded in 2020.

Today, whether in the United States or China, when it comes to “popcorn lung,” many people will think of e-cigarettes, giving regular e-cigarettes a reputation that does not belong to them.

According to the well-known brand Geekvape-Qisi manufacturing professionals, the main components of ordinary regular e-cigarette e-liquid are water, propylene glycol, glycerine, nicotine, and flavoring agents.

All these ingredients are nicotine products that can reduce the harm of cigarettes. On the other hand, the synthetic cannabinoids in the “strongly obsessed ” e-cigarettes are new types of drugs, which will make users addicted to drugs unknowingly.

They are not traditional e-cigarettes at all, but they can quickly stigmatize the e-cigarette industry. This requires regular e-cigarette practitioners to be more self-disciplined and strictly supervise the industry, beware of illegal e-cigarettes, and not repeat the mistake of “popcorn lung.”

He also said that as a regular e-cigarette practitioner, the entire chain should undergo strict checks from the source selection of materials and compliance to the safety testing before leaving the factory.

Electronic cigarettes need to be treated rationally. But, unfortunately, for many ordinary consumers, the perception of the harmfulness of electronic cigarettes comes from the “survivor bias” of information acceptance.

E-cigarettes are a legal industry in China. The establishment, operation, and tax payment of enterprises following the law are protected by law. However, due to the lack of supervision, non-compliance has emerged in the industry.

Masses also regard this new thing as a scourge. But now, the advent of supervision is about to resolve this chaos, and it will also allow China’s e-cigarette industry to develop more healthily.

For ordinary consumers and “traditional smokers” who want to try e-cigarettes, what they must do is to stay away from prejudice and establish a scientific and systematic understanding of e-cigarettes.
